Santiago Thomás de Carranza
Santiago Thomás de Carranza y Méndez de Vigo is a co-founding partner of the firm. Lawyer and Economist. University Professor. President of the Sports Discipline Committee of the Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation.
After completing his university studies, he prepared for the competitive examination for the position of Counsel of State. In 1997 he joined the law firm of Melchor de las Heras, where he worked in the commercial and public law departments. In 2003, he founded the firm Thomás de Carranza Abogados, of which he is currently managing partner.
Santiago has extensive practical experience in the field of commercial and financial law as well as in administrative regulatory law (contentious and advisory) and procedural law.
In the field of commercial and financial law, he has participated in numerous transactions involving the purchase and sale of companies, investment and disinvestment, venture capital, as well as in the preparation, negotiation and drafting of contracts, agreements and collaboration agreements between companies of different types. He has also advised on the start-up and development of numerous business processes, both in Spain and abroad, working regularly with lawyers from different countries and jurisdictions (start-ups; capital development; shareholder agreements; mergers; spin-offs; separation processes; etc.). He has also participated in the design and implementation of different sale and purchase and financing structures, mainly linked to the real estate sector and the field of renewable energies, advising his clients both in the preliminary phase of construction, supply and commissioning of the facilities, as well as in the financing phase.
In the area of administrative regulatory law, Santiago has extensive practical experience in both the advisory and procedural fields. He has advised the Ministry of Public Works in the development of the toll road program and its adaptation to new financing techniques, as well as other public entities and organizations. He has also advised different individuals and private entities in their relations with the Public Administrations in matters as diverse as public procurement, construction, service and public domain concessions (water, ports, roads, etc.), health services, postal services, environment, telecommunications, energy, liability of the Public Administrations, expropriations, urban planning, sports, etc.
He has also participated in numerous transactions involving the acquisition and sale of companies operating in the public sector (energy, concessionaires and contractors of the public sector, telecommunications, radio, etc.), as well as in the incorporation and management of regulated entities (venture capital companies, investment services companies, etc.).
In the field of procedural law, Santiago has more than 20 years of experience, mainly in the field of contentious-administrative jurisdiction and civil and commercial jurisdiction. He has also participated as counsel in different arbitration proceedings (both in law and in equity) and is a member of the Insolvency Administration.
He has been president of the Appeals Committee of the Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation (2008-2010) and is currently president of the Sports Discipline Committee of the Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation, of which he has been a member since 2010. Santiago has also been recommended by the prestigious international directory Best Lawyers as one of the best trial lawyers in the country (period 2013 to date).
Regarding its link to the university world refers, just to point out that Santiago has been a professor of administrative law at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria since 2001; member of the Faculty and the Academic Council of the Master in European Union Law at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid since 2012 (professor of professional deontology); professor of administrative law at Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles (IEB) since 2019; guest professor at the University Master’s Degree in Radio at Fundación Cope.
He has also been a professor of civil procedural law and contentious-administrative law at the School of Legal Practice of the Faculty of Law of the Complutense University of Madrid from 2001 to 2019.
He is the author of various doctrinal studies and articles and has had the honor of participating as a speaker in various seminars of a legal nature.
